In 2007, Samsung's rigid AMOLED mass production kicked off the replacement of LCD by OLED in the mobile phone field. From 2013 to 2018, flexible AMOLED will develop. The production of its screen requires PI paste as a substrate and the replacement of substrate glass with display panel substrate, which is the most important demand in the display field. In 2019, folding screens will become the tuyere, and there will be up to 3 demands for PI films for folding screens: PI paste as a substrate base material, CPI film as a touch panel, and CPI hardened film as a cover plate. At present, because the touch on OLED has been gradually replaced by TPOT technology (TP circuit is directly made on OLED package), the demand for CPI film of touchpad will also be gradually reduced, while the demand for YPI paste as the substrate and CPI hardened film as the cover plate is still considerable. The PI flexible substrate film made by PI paste curing can meet the application requirements of OLED mobile phones with light weight, bendable and even foldable due to its high heat resistance, high temperature dimensional stability, impact resistance, strong flexibility, water and oxygen resistance and other characteristics. Each application product of the display panel advances in the direction of rigidity → curved surface → foldable → rollable. In the process of technology update and iteration, PI material has gradually become the application material of OLED mobile phone TFT substrate and cover plate.

OLED, known as organic light-emitting diode, is the third generation of display technology after CRT and LCD, and is widely used in mobile phones, smart wearable devices, laptop, tablet and other fields. AMOLED has significant performance advantages and is the mainstream technology route, while PI is the preferred material for flexible display device substrates. According to Omida, the global OLED panel market is $34.324 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $54.705 billion in 2025. As the world's largest consumer electronics market, OLED production capacity is growing rapidly in China. According to Frost & Sullivan, in 2020, China's global share of OLED panel production will be 12.37 percent, exceeding 10 percent for the first time, and is expected to rise to 24.3 percent in 2025. The growth of terminal AMOLED panel market scale has driven the demand for materials in the upstream of the new display industry supply chain. According to the forecast, the total scale of the global flexible AMOLED substrate PI paste market will exceed US $0.4 billion by 2025, with a compound growth rate of 31.9 from 2020 to 2025, while the domestic market space is expected to exceed US $0.2 billion. If folding AMOLED becomes standard for mobile phone screens, the demand for PI in the display field is expected to double.
